ION TO THE RESCUE
On 25th February at around 10.30am he heard a woman screaming. Ion ran to see what was happening and as the woman rang for the emergency services she pointed to a man in the water. Without hesitation, Ion took off his heavy jacket and boots and jumped in. The man was 60 metres or so away and Ion managed to get hold of him and bring him safely to the ladder on the side of the quay wall. The man was by this time unconscious and they had to wait several minutes before the fire brigade arrived to lift them to safety. Ion told ‘NewsFour’ that he never thought of himself as a great swimmer but he said “it was the human thing to do. The man was struggling and beginning to go under.” The worst part was the temperature of the water at 5ºC which left him shivering, he says. ‘NewsFour’ would like to add our congratulations for his act of bravery. |
