ALL ARE WELCOME AT SANDYMOUNT BRIDGE CLUB
By Brian Rutherford
Anyone interested in taking up bridge but who is unsure how to play can learn in just 10 short weeks. Qualified bridge teachers give lessons in many of the VECs. Anyone interested in taking part should contact their local VEC or contact the President of Sandymount Bridge Club. When you learn to play bridge you will agree that it is the greatest card game ever devised. You will welcome the winter nights as you will always have company and you will wonder why you left it so long to take up the game. In the summer there are organised bridge holidays and weekends in Ireland and abroad and many hotels arrange bridge weekends and lessons. Sandymount Bridge club has been going for 30 years now and meets every Monday and Wednesday 7.30 to 10.30 pm in Christ Church Hall, Sandymount Green. The club contains players of all levels from novices and beginners to experienced, competitive players. It has a proud record for producing strong bridge players. The club exists to play bridge and to enjoy it. Just as important as the Monday and Wednesday night card playing sessions are the social activities and the unique social atmosphere of the club. The priority is to enjoy yourself, play cards, meet people and generally relax. For those who wish to seriously compete, facilities and support are provided. The Club specialises in contact Bridge. This is a partnership game. It is ideally adapted for social play at home or at clubs. It is great for tournament play among more experienced members. It is enjoyed equally by casual players who do not want to take the game too seriously and by scientific players who wish to study and master the intricacies of complex bidding techniques and card play strategies. There are special nights and each year there are five competitions, The Eileen Lyons Cup, the Terry Brazil Cup, The Kennedy cup and the Brenda Cup. There is a pairs competition, President’s night and an excellent Christmas party. New members are the lifeblood of the club. Beginners, guests and new members are most welcome at any time and there is a relaxed friendly atmosphere for newcomers. The annual subscription is €15 and currently there is a membership of 72 people and there are 9 tables in use. The cost per evening is €5. If you decide to go along you will enjoy a pleasant, relaxing evening in wonderful surroundings and pleasant company. If you don’t have a partner host partners are provided.
