DOCKLANDS LIFFEY SWIM AND BOAT RACE

The first club swimming event of the season took place on Saturday, the 12th of June, at the Custom House Quay in Dublin’s Docklands. The organisers were expecting over a hundred men and fifty women to complete the 150 metre course.

Sandra O'Leary, from Sutton, was the first lady to complete the course, in second place was Mary Aldridge, while Hayley Pickering, came third. The winner of the men's race was Phillip White, Mark Farrell, was placed second.

The event was part of a series organised by the Docklands Authority as part of its efforts to revitalise the River Liffey. Most recently, the Docklands Maritime Festival attracted nearly 10,000 people to see visiting tall ships, art exhibits and to shop at an Continental Market.

Following hot on the heels of the Liffey Swin, the Docklands Liffey Challenge, Cork 1720s Sports Boat Race took place, on Sunday, the 20th of June. The race featured the Cork 1720s, a high performance racing yacht, often considered the Formula 1 of yacht racing in Ireland. The race covered the portion of the Liffey between the Dublin City Moorings and Spencer Dock.

 

 

The winning boat was the 'Yoke', owned by Adam Winkleman. It was manned by Melissa Evans (Howth Yacht Club), Linda Crawford (National Yacht Club), Des Flood (Howth Yacht Club), Gary O'Hare (Royal St. George Yacht Club) and Mike Evans (Howth Yacht Club).

This is the fifth year that Dublin's Docklands have hosted The Liffey Challenge, which is one of the highlights of the Cork 1720s calendar. It follows hot on the heels of the Docklands Maritime festival, which featured the Grand Turk, The Jeanie Johnston, the Asgard II and Kathleen & May.
