MIR SAILS INTO DUBLIN

Arriving early on Bloomsdsay, Wednesday, June 16th, the spectacular Russian tall ship, Mir, was open to the public for one day only at Sir John Rogerson’s Quay in Dublin’s Docklands.

Designed and built in 1987, the Mir was intended for shipboard training of navigating cadets and taking part in tall ships races. At different times, she has carried on board from 70 to 140 cadets from maritime educational institutions in the USSR (later Russia) and beyond.

A regular participant in the tall ships regattas, the Mir’s most memorable voyage was in the Grand Regatta Columbus where she was the absolute winner. The name of the STS "Mir" meaning “Peace” is well known to people in the sailing community. At ports all over the world.

The visit of the Mir follows the Docklands Maritime Festival, which featured the Grand Turk, the Jeanie Johnston, the Asgard II and Kathleen & May. The Jeanie Johnston alone had over 5,000 visitors during a busy bank holiday weekend in the Docklands.

The event is part of a series organised by the Docklands Authority as part of its efforts to revitalise the River Liffey.
