BLOOMSDAY ON SANDYMOUNT GREEN

Bloomsday on the GreenSandymount held Bloomsday celebrations, under blue skies, on Sandymount Green. The gathered crowds saw, among other things, young and old dressed in period costume, and Ulysses read in German.

You can take a look at the pictures that NewsFour took of the festivetives in the Bloomsday on Sandymount Green section.

We couldn’t leave you for two months without some interesting news and photographs to keep you going.

John, our photographer, and I attended the Bloomsday celebrations in Sandymount Green. It was a great event and the usual stalwarts performed to celebrate the centenary of Leopald Bloom’s big day. Michael McAuliffe was Master of Ceremonies and as usual conducted the entertainment in his own inimitable style. Tom Aherne, Rodney Devitt, Jim Carroll, John Flood, Peter Murphy, Pat McEvoy among others read selected passages. Big Al of Radio Sandymount fame read in German whilst Michael translated, and a James Joyce look-alike, Dermod Lynskey, rendered a version of the publisher’s fear of libel. Another contributor read Patrick Kavanagh’s poem “Who killed James Joyce?” Maureen Siggins and The Melody Girls dressed in costumes of the period joined the assembly to sing music hall songs of the era, which was warmly received by the audience filling the Green. I hope the photographs give you a flavour of the day. A video of the whole day’s shenanigans will be available shortly. More details in our August issue. The pupils of St Matthews School dressed up for the occasion and their photograph is also included.

We were also at the Liffey Swim and the visit of the Mir ship on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay which had sailed in from Russia. The Maritime Festival organised by the DDDA was a great success with stalls, artists and ships in abundance.

We thought we would show you some old photographs to revive memories. Please get in touch with any pictures that you think might interest our readers (NewsFour).

I thought you might like to have an update on the broken arm. It is not responding as well as the doctors would like. They have given me four more weeks to ‘grow bone’ or else they will operate. Any ideas for recovery would be greatly appreciated.

Have a great Summer. I’m off to Portugal for two weeks and hope the sun will do me good.
