RE-BIRTH OF ST MARY'S LAWN TENNIS CLUB
By Anna Maria Barry

St Maryʼs Lawn Tennis
Club is celebrating a complete
overhaul of its new
clubhouse and facilities which
are located on Belmont Villas
in the heart of Donnybrook.

On Saturday 30th January,
Minister John Gormley TD officially
opened the evening with
a small ceremony and packed
club filled by members and supporters.

The Minister for the Environment,
Heritage and Local
Government John Gormley TD
warmly commended the effort
that has gone into developing
the Club so that its facilities can
be accessed by local schools,
businesses and the community
which it serves.

Former Lord Mayor and
active member of St Maryʼs,
Councillor Dermot Lacey added:
“Tonight marks another
chapter in St Maryʼs archive. It
has gone through many changes
since its inception in the late
1940ʼs and to date emerges as
a vibrant sports club. The club
has received so much support
from local schools, community
groups and not forgetting its
members.

“Iʼm delighted to witness the
transformation and the many
benefits the club delivers and to
wish it continued success.”

In conclusion, David Leonard,
Chairman of St Maryʼs
Lawn Tennis Club said: “The
redevelopment of our club
has taken place over the last
eighteen months, and has involved
an enormous effort by
its members of what is a relatively
small club. It has cost us
€500,000, and has been made
possible by a grant of €170,000
from the Sports Capital Unit of
the Department of Arts, Sport
and Gaeltacht, funded from the
Lotto.

“It has been well worth every
effort because it will enable us
to continue to develop the community
spirit to which we are
accustomed and is a valuable
local amenity for all ages.”
