With climate change now
an established fact,
governments worldwide
are introducing progressive
legislation to curb and replace the
use of fossil fuels.
With global energy demand set
to increase, there is an undeniable
and urgent need to develop new
renewable energy technologies.
OpenHydro, a new venture located
in Dublinʼs Docklands, is
hoping to lead the way in providing
renewable energy sources to
fill that need.
They are one of a number of
companies developing axial turbines
to harness tidal power. These
are very simular in concept to wind
turbines, except these structures
would be tethered to the sea bed.
According to OpenHydro, installations
will be silent and invisible
from the surface and will be
located at depth in order to present
no danger to shipping.
If built, farms of Open-Centre
Turbines would provide a significant
and undetectable supply of
clean, predictable and renewable
energy.
Prototypes are currently being
tested in Orkney, Scotland. |
