Minister for Social,
Community and Family Affairs, Derrnot Ahern, sang the praises of the Money
Advice and Budgeting Service at the launch recently of the Annual Report
of the Dublin South East MABS in Temple Bar.
“The MABS programme stands as a single example of how co-operation
between the voluntary and statutory sectors can act to serve the whole
community in a practical and meaningful way.
The great strides made in developing the Service is evidenced by the fact
that, even though the Pilot Programme was only instigated in 1992, already
there is a nationwide network in place with 50 projects in operation throughout
the country.”
“The free, confidential and independent nature of the service has
helped many people throughout the country to overcome their problems with
debt and get their personal finances back on a sound footing. I would
like to commend the work of all those involved with the Dublin South East
MABS which enjoys a particularly high profile in its catchment area and
which continues to deal with an increasing number of clients and enquiries.
The Dublin South East MABS (originally known as Ringsend Action Project)
is based at 136A Pearse Street. It commenced operations in July 1996 and
covers the postal districts of Dublin 2, 4 and 6. It operates an outreach
service from the Rathmines Information Centre and the Ringsend Credit
Union.
The Project has been funded by the Department of Social Community and
Family Affairs under the MABS Programme since 1996 and has been allocated
core funding of £80,000 for the year 2000. It is expected that a
further three year contract will be agreed shortly.
The Project is staffed by 2 Money Advisers, Ms. Lorraine Waters and Ms.
Annette Carrigan and an Administration worker, Ms. Catherine Humphreys.
