MR. KANE'S TRAIN
|
To get a train set
at Christmas was once the highlight of a young lad’s childhood.
At a recent visit to Willow Park School in Booterstown, where the Society
of Model Railways were holding their Annual Exhibition, I spoke with Mr.Francis
Kane of Haddington Road. Francis has a most impressive train set, which
he has built up over the past twenty-five years. |
A MILLENIUM FOR ALL CULTURES
By Darina McCann
| This New Year’s
Eve, everyone in Ireland will raise a glass or two to welcome the new Millenium. Whether you are a Christian or not, across all cultures and divides of language and custom, we can all celebrate with equal enthusiasm a new year and and the beginning of a new era. Perhaps it is the most unifying and secular festival, bypassing a lot the observances associated with most religions and creeds. Even when the date is different, like with the Chinese and Vietnamese who celebrate their New Year on Feb 4th with fireworks and painted Dragons, going from house to house in their own villages. As Ireland becomes more cosmopolitan and welcomes the new Millenium with more diversity and great optimism for the future for all our people, let all the parties be good ones! To those of us who are Muslim and use the lunar calendar, a peaceful Ramadan and a happy New Year of 1400. Best Wishes, too, to the Bosnian-Herzogovinians who are still looking for a good venue for their annual New Year’s Eve children’s party, where Santy Claus will be handing out the traditional New Year’s gifts. Happy New Year to our Russian Speakers’ Society and Tamare, who assured us that vodka and food were the stable diets of all Russans on New Years Eve, and who welcome the last stroke of midnight with a hug and a glass of champagne! A Happy New Year to the Vietnamese Society, the oldest refugee society in Ireland, with a proud tradition of taking over a good resturant and singing Vietnamese songs till the early hours. To the many and diversely colourful Africans, Asians and Europeans who will share the night of December 31st, who work beside us and enrich our culture and our company. Each of us will celebrate in our own unique and vibrant way in what will, for some time to come, will surely be the most memorable occasion that Ireland has ever seen! |
MORE BELLS TO RING IN THE MILLENIUM
| Along with the many
other sounds that will fill the air on the night of the new millennium,
there will also be the sound of a new world record. The record will come in the form of nineteen bells echoing from the towers of Christ Church Cathedral. The reason for this is that the authorities in Christ Church have commissioned seven new bells to be added to the already existing twelve. These are rung regularly for services in the church and for the annual New Year celebrations. With the new bells, however, this New Year’s celebrations will indeed be something out of the ordinary. The new arrivals will ensure that when the peals of the bells begin ringing in the New Year and New Millennium on December 31st they will produce a sound that will be remembered for some time to come. The style of ringing which will be employed on the night is called full-circle ringing and has been practised at the cathedral for at least 500 years. It is a style that involves a sweeping and swooping in great arcs of sound and is sure to generate much emotion in the hearts of all Dubliners who hear it. |
