Denis O’Brien from Ennis Grove called in to see us recently with
the photo of the Millar Shield Winners above. The photo was given to Denis
by his good neighbour , Mrs. Doolin, to whom we give many thanks. In chatting
with Denis he has many stories about football in Ringsend. One great story
is about the Chapel Cup which was played around 1937 to 1940. Bridge View
against York Rovers started the competition for a football which was displayed
in Ferraris, the chippers window. The proceeds of the huge attendances
at the matches would go to the upkeep of St Patrick’s Church, Ringsend.
Teams were drawn from Ringsend, Irishtown, Pearse St and Ballsbridge.
The finals were always
played in Shelbourne Park with a packed house in attendance.
Denis played for Bridge View who were familiarly known as Morania. On
Maguires shop side of the street opposite the Regal Cinema you had to
go down into a cellar to get changed. It was called Morania as over in
the Regal every week the trailer was called “ The Underworld of
Morania”.
