With
the recent accident of a lorry turning over at the London Bridge Road
corner another accident at Ringsend Bridge is definitely on the cards.
Ringsend Bridge was built over two hundred years ago. In those far off
days traffic was obviously minimal. Today, to walk or cycle over the bridge
you take your life in your hands. The steady flow of traffic, particularly
three ton lorries, come and go with frightening regularity.
"A tragic accident will happen on the bridge sooner rather than later,"
says local resident John Ward. He is adamant of this. He recommends that
something has to be done as soon as possible. He suggests that traffic
lights could alternate to allow a single line of traffic only at any one
time. This would give the cyclist or pedestrian at least a little bit
more safety.
Mr. Ward also would see traffic calming on the approach to and from Irishtown
Road as an important contributory factor to safety for the streets of
Ringsend. Irishtown Road into and out of Bridge Street is a racetrack.
Mr Ward is adamant that something has to be done as an overall strategy
for the streets of Ringsend.
It is now up to the community of Ringsend to take action.
