THE RINN VOYAGER
By Derek Hollingsworth

"This is your opportunity to realise your dreams, to develope new skills and meet new friends, but above all to have fun."

At the time of writing, the Rinn Voyager is berthed in the Grand Canal Dockyard. Built locally, the sailing boat is the focus of a Dick Warner television series.

R.T.E. are to screen the documentaries between January and March. The Rinn Voyager's trip from Dublin to Valencia, which included 22 ports of call, will be featured.
The boat was built over a period of 3 years by a total of thirty builders, all locals, with F.A.S. financing the labour. The purpose of the venture was to provide training and jobs for the unemployed and to; "provide an opportunity for young people from all backgrounds to go to sea under sail."

The keel was laid by Ruarí Quinn TD., and the vessel was launched by former President Mary Robinson. It's sea trials were completed in September 1996.

Weighing in at 24 tonnes, she is 42 feet long, with a beam of 12 feet 6 inches. She has full safety equipment. TheVoyager is an 8 berth boat, allowing room for Skipper Gerry Moran, a Mate, and six Trainees. Trainees may spend up to a fortnight sailing in the summer, normally a single night in winter. The fees are £30 per night for those aged 16-25. Over 25's are charged at the higher rate of £40. For this, the trainee receives three good meals a day, all cooked by the Captain, their instruction, and of course, the experience of being at sea. Training is given in a wide range of subjects, such as; layout, boat handling, steering a compass course, man over board, deck work, berthing, use of ropes and knots and their uses.

Eighteen cruises were completed by the Rinn Voyager between April 12th and September 28th with a total of 91 nights at sea. All organisations are welcome but a group must have a leader, responsible for the team. Corporate day or weekend sailing from Dublin is available on application.
