LOWE RANGER: THROUGH THE FIELDS OF RINGSEND
By Anthony Owens

Nearly everyone in footballing circles knows Ringsend. Countless numbers of internationals have played in Ringsend Park at one time or another and I'm sure they all gave the pitches the thumbs-up. The pitches are in fantastic condition all year round and a lot of the thanks must go to the park ranger Tony Lowe. Tony is a friendly chap who always has a smile on his face. He has been working in Ringsend Park for the past eight years and before that twenty five years in Herbert Park. In fact Tony is the longest serving park ranger in Dublin Corporation. Tony's job involves looking after the day to day running of the park and the job varies from one day to the next.

He was quite a good footballer in his day and had a varied soccer career playing for such illustrious teams as St James Gate, Grange Utd. and Worksmans Club. He also represented Ireland at Under 21 level, playing against N.Ireland. Most notably of all he has played on the hallowed turf of Wembley with an English club side called Hendon.

The facilities in Ringsend Park itself are second to none- five fantastic pitches, tennis and basketball courts and two action packed playgrounds. There is also a top of the range pavilion available to all the teams who use the park. We asked Tony -What he thought about the rumour that Ringsend Park is under used? Tony replied that there are currently over thirty five teams who use the park and there is a great demand for the pitches especially at the week-ends.

Teams are not allowed train on the pitches because they might damage them for the week-ends and because of this matches are only called off as a last resort. By the way there's no point in complaining to Tony if the pitches are called off because he doesn't make the rules he just inforces them.
