Women's
soccer has come on hugely in recent times. Our international team are
currently featuring strongly in their World Cup campaign. Our area has
a great tradition in the men's game but if local club St. Brigid's is
anything to go by the ladies will be creating their own international
history.
The club was formed by John Watson in 1992 to introduce the girls from
St. Brigid's School in Haddington Road to soccer. Local lads Eric and
Maurice Frazer from Bath Avenue are Assistant Manager and Secretary respectively.
Ann Mitchell was secretary from 1992-1994.
The Roll of Honour began in 1994 with the U-13 side being League runners-up
and Shield winners. Over the past three years there were near misses but
the, now, U-16 side were League winners this year.
The team draws its players from our area and is now looking for a sponsor.
There are six final Irish Team trialists in the squad at the moment. It
would be a safe bet that international caps are just around the corner
for this maturing team. It is imperative that a sponsor comes on board
for the new year or this very worthwhile community venture will fold.
Before we give you the contact numbers, let us give special mention to
Scruffy Murphy's for the use of their jerseys and to Paddy Bray for the
use of his mini bus.
