The club have been involved
in raising money for five different charities, over the past five years,
and through their rowing skills, the club have undertaken some gruelling
races in an effort to raise money.
St Patrick’s first got involved five years ago to raise money for
a young girl who was undergoing a bone marrow transplant, and have not
been able to give up the challenge since.
Every year members of the club go to Cobh, Cork, to compete in the 15
mile row around the island, with the senior crew always taking first place.
Once again, the U/18 Boys returned to take part in the 22 mile race on
the Thames in a time of 2 hours 41 mins. Having won last year as U/16,
they triumphed again and beat six countries in the race.
The training for the two races takes a lot of time and dedication, not
to mention filling sponsor cards to raise money.
Over the five years the club has raised £10,600, and for their efforts
the lads were awarded with a plaque at the recent Seán Moore awards.
Well done to the following; Tommy Murphy, Gay Murphy, Ger McDonnell, Peter
Donaldson, David Doyle, John Doyle, Paul Kavanagh, James Lawless, Martin
Murphy, John Paul Hawkins, Barry Saunders, Paul Campbell, John Paul Pearse,
Sandra Hawkins, Sarah Byrne.
The club would like to thank John Allen’s 4th Port Sea Scouts for
the use of their rescue craft, Mr Charlie McManus, Principal, Ringsend
Tech, and the family of the late Jimmy Geoghegan for the use of their
boat for the Cobh race and finally to all the people who gave so generously
to their sponsor cards.
