City Centre Marina
and Club targets new Sailing Enthusiasts
A
new generation of sailors, many who may be new to the sport, are the target
for a new international standard Marina, to be built within shouting distance
of the Point Theatre and the International Financial Services Centre in Dublin's
Docklands.
Plans for the Poolbeg Yacht and Boat Club and Marina project were launched on
24th March by Sports and Tourism Minister John O'Donoghue TD.
The Marina will provide a new alternative to the older, established facilities
in Dun Laoghaire, Malahide and Howth, and will deliberately target those who
are new to the sport, as well as accommodating existing sailors who wish to
have a mooring close to Dublin's city centre.
A luxurious club-house which will feature conference, training and bar facilities
will make a unique contribution to the huge revival of Dublin's oldest commercial
maritime area, and the 100 berth marina will be built to the highest International
standards, providing sailors with services and facilities, along with security,
which will be second to none.
The project is the brainchild of a thirty-year old club, which predominately
draws its membership from the local community. The club has built a reputation
as an inclusive one, which also has a high standard of sailing participation,
including the unique 'Three Island' racing weekend.
It places emphasis on family-based activity, in which members sail 'In Company'
both to Irish and European destinations. A high level of Sail Training is also
a feature of the club's activities, with members gaining skills right up to
Yachtsmaster level.
Marian Flannery of Development Solutions is managing the project. Speaking at
he launch, Ms. Flannery said the uniqueness of the project made it a major attraction
in the Dublin area. Club Commodore Jerry Whiston said the plans being launched
were a huge achievement for the club and the area.
'This club has been at the heart of the community for over three decades. The
major step forward we are announcing here today exemplifies the spirit of the
area in recent times.'
Minister
John O'Donoghue expressed confidence that the Poolbeg facility would play a
major part in achieving the National strategy outlined by the Government in
its National Development Plan and Tourism Development Plan. 'The development
of a marina in Poolbeg addresses a number of issues of concern laid out in both
these plans. I am delighted that we have been able to make a contribution of
€150,000 from the Sports Capital Fund to the cost of the clubhouse redevelopment,
and I have every confidence that the management team of Development Solutions,
and the progressive club committee here will bring these plans to fruition.
'From a strategic point of view, access to Dublin's City Centre is vital for
tourists in every sector, and sailors are no different. How wonderful it will
be for sailors from around Ireland or visiting from abroad to be able to moor
in the centre of one of Europe's most popular cities, in such a friendly, community-oriented
club. I wish the project "Fair Sailing'''.
